The Strangeness of South Africans

In the poll I have been referring to in posts of past. While I understand not all the voters are saffas, a fair lot must be. But I'm looking at the results and just thinking, "Really?"

AB de Villiers 41%
JP Duminy 23%
Johan Botha 11%
Snuh snuh snuh, some people including Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibbs at 5%
Albie Morkel 3%, tied with Jacques Kallis

Who is rigging this system? Tell me, who? Is Johan Botha really that popular?

I say vote Albie in droves. Just vote Albie, do it. Do it. Do it. If I repeat it enough times, I'm hoping you'll actually do it.

But if you're just generally a cruel person who wants to see Albie languish near the bottom of the table with JACQUES KALLIS for company, at least have the heart to vote JP Duminy. He can catch better than I can, and I'm pretty good at catching things, it's my forte. Only Sybrand Engelbrecht is better than JP (just realised I hadn't mentioned my best friend for a while, so there's the reference). And what's more, if you've watched JP bat you'll never want to convert to ABdom. To top it all off, JP doesn't preach at you.

Of course, I'd much prefer it if you went Albie. Ta.
And yes, I do believe I just said 'ta'. My grandma never said it so often.

I am so glad to see Botha at 11% so it's not just me who thinks he is better than Smith. I wish some of the others would also get a percentage.

The batsman always gets favoured. AB is a batsman but JP is an all-rounder. What about Steyn. It's such a pitty that Roelof vd Merwe isnt listed. Van the Man would get my vote just for being so entertaining.

I think people are voting Botha to send a message to selectors that he needs to take over the captaincy from Smith. Why did he ever get the gig as captain? - he's dragged SA down as a team. Imagine how great they'd be if Botha or Kallis was leading!!! And Smith is a blight on international cricket - he's ugly, inarticulate, rarely performs, is universally disliked, even by his own countrymen and is the only cricketer who can't find a girlfriend.

Vote for Botha or Duminy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see Boncam has a great idea there. Down with Smith the ASS.

I think Botha's great. I think Majola only tolerates Smith because he's a sycophant. Vote Botha or AB.

Boncam, you're right about batsmen. They're glorified in all aspects of cricket. I have a degree of respect for bowlers from the start because they really put the hard yards in for the team. Bowling isn't about making a cameo appearance, it's tough stuff.

Anon, vote for Albie, actually. And what on earth are you talking about when you say Kallis could captain better than Smith?

Anon 2, interesting, more Graeme hate. Maybe I should start hating him to in order to appeal to the masses. But then again, I've never wanted to do that so whatever.

J, vote Albie, not AB. And JP, not Botha.

Anonymous said...

Yeah batsmen are granted all the favours.

I agree with Boncam, where is ROFL? He's a gun.

Thanks anon (all of you) I just voted the first time for today and noticed Botha is up to 15%. That's great. I don't mean for Botha to win the award but all I wanted was him to get more votes than Smith. You can vote more than once. Dont forget about JP, Morkel & Steyn.

I don't think Kallis would be a good choice. He even sledged his mates in the IPL. Not cool. Besides he is 33 yrs old. He wont be captain for long.

Wow! How is this for you? If you go through all the comments regarding this poll, no one has come to the defense of Smith. I think his mommy is behind that 4%

this is why all Morne's fans hate Smith!

justin kemp would probably return to the team after the icl cool off period. i say the saffers should give him the captaincy, man was an animal with the bat!
also, since the only reason gay smith was made captain was because he was the only one with a permanent place in that team not to be of hansie's era. i say kemp could get rid of the smith era as well.
how's that for a thought? although i guess the man does like money more than his country, so we might just be back to hansie era again. history repeats itself eh?

What about Boucher?

Amy said...

Esra, I guess he hasn't been around on the international stage long enough to be considered for it. Next year maybe. I'd vote for him.

Boncam, please explain to me why every SA hates Graeme Smith so much. I had no idea it was so bad.

Anon, I had a feeling it would be that video. What's wrong? I'm sure Morne liked it. Cue evil cackling.

K, GS hasn't been all that bad as captain, has he? I wouldn't go out of my way to call myself a fan of him, but I don't despise him either. This is an interesting development.

Anon, what about him? I guess people don't really love him all that much. Bloody AB.

Unknown said...

Why do we dislike GS? Where to begin....

Give me some time to get all the facts and I will email you.

K said...

naah! i don't hate GS either. especially when he came out to bat in injury, i had newfound respect for him. it's just that i never knew he was hated so much. didn't want to be an outcast. so tagged along.
but the fat fuck must shed some kilos too.
i voted for JP. and albie.
ab is tops because jésus voted for him. AB's very popular in mexico you know..

I thought Smith was an ok captain. Better than some going around. Plus he does bring a comedic element to the table.

I'd give ROFL a vote. I love Bouch but I'm pretty sure he doesn't want the captaincy as being the keeper is enough for him.

I can't even really take part in this discussion about Graeme Smith because my opinion of him is so weirdly skewed. By my own doing, of course. But in my head, he's almost not even a real person, just a caricature.

Unknown said...

Who has been voting for Smith? He is up to 5% Albie is still stuck on 3%

I can't get over the fact that he had and then lost the sexiest girl in SA. I think GS is a has been. Did he do RR any good? He is not consistent anymore. If he can get back into form, great for him. But the matter of the fact is that Botha has outplayed Smith. GS is known to be self-centered. Listen when people congratulate him on a win, he never states that the whole team did their part.

Amy, if you want to know what the saffers think about GS vs JB: read this thread from the Supersport forum.

It seems the arguments for retaining Smith as captain are pretty reasonable. He's not exactly doing a great deal wrong, and god knows he might not be the smartest captain but it hardly seems cause to dump him. Botha hasn't even captained for many matches, and that too only ODIs. I don't particularly see the cause for replacing Smith with Botha.

Unknown said...

Amy are you saying that even though he is not performing as a batsman we should just keep him in the team to be captain?

Amy said...

No, just that he hasn't done so bad that he should be dropped altogether, and that Botha hasn't done anywhere near as well enough to captain a Test team. Where's that suggestion coming from anyway?

Unknown said...

My apologies, Amy. GS can stay in the test squad.

I was really surprised to see that there were a lot of people who agreed with me. So Botha must be a fan favourite or like Anon 1 said.

I dont hate GS. I hate the Pillsbury man/ Michellin man (Oros man to the saffers) with the fungus growing on his head.

Amy said...

No, don't apologise! You're entitled to your own opinion, and if it's that GS is a shit captain which he pretty much is, so be it. I was just giving an outsider's POV to the situation because I haven't exactly noticed the Graeme-hate that saffas seem to have.

I'm in, lets vote Botha.

Sara said...

Yeah, you botha voters are doing a great job I see! AB and Botha are tied in 30-30 now!

Amy said...

Anon, let's not.

Sara, the fact that Johan Botha is equally as popular as AB, who everyone seems to love, is a little disconcerting.
